Video Game Movie Adaptations

The video game market has really exploded globally in the past few years, it is now said to be bigger than movie and music industry combined. Hollywood has always been quick to follow trends and adapting video games into movies has proven to be a successful venture to a large extent.

Video game play and movies are both forms of entertainment; however playing games require active input from the player for the action to happen while with movies, the spectator only need to look on and watch to enjoy the action.

The following are some of the movies that were originally developed as video games but have now been adapted into full feature films. They were successful as video games and became a success as movie adaptation.

  1. Rampage (2018)

The Rampage video games were arcade games with multiple sequels across a number of platforms that began in 1986 up until the mid-2000s. There was George, a King-Kong look-alike, Lizzie, a Godzilla-like giant lizard, or Ralph, the wolf. The game was adapted into movie in 2018, starring Dwayne Johnson.

Warcraft is a game movie adaptation that was quite successful, it took almost a decade to make and it grossed over $400 million worldwide. The game characters were interpreted by Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton and Toby Kebbel.

  1. Tomb Raider (2018)

 

The Tomb raider game hit the shelves in 1996 and was first adapted into movie in 2001 starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. It was then rebooted in 2018, starring Alicia Vikander.

  1. Monster Hunter (2020)

This game adaptation starring Milla Jokovich and Paul W.S. Anderson, centered on the hunting of giant monsters. It is one of the highly-appraised video game movies that work towards improving the industry. It has a lot of action sequences with a cameo from martial artist, Tony Jaa.

  1. Assassin’s Creed

The game centers on Callum Lynch, who through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar de Nerha, in the 15th century. The movie adaptation was played by Michael Fassbender.

The first movie adaptation was in 1995 but has had some other sequels. The newest reboot was done in 2021. Mortal Kombat has been a long running successful video game franchise. The latest adaptation stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee and Josh Lawson

  1. Sonic the Hedgehog

It is said to be one of the best live-action animated movie made. In the movie, the hedgehog was working together with the local sheriff to stop the evil Dr. Robonik from making the world his own. It was one of the highest grossing films of 2020. Part 2 of the film franchise is set to be released in 2022. The movie starred Ben Schwarz as Sonic’s voice over, James Marsden as the local sheriff and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robonik. This is the game movie for you, if you are looking for fast and funny with witty deliverables.

  1. Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019)

This movie adaptation, starring Ryan Reynolds (dead pool) and Justice Smith was a commercially successful venture. This is the game movie for you, if you are looking for a diversion from the gory visuals of a lot of game movies. It is both fun and sweet.

  1. Werewolves Within (2021)

This is one of the latest video game adaptations to hit the screen. It is a comedic horror movie that is filled with both fun and games. It’s got a group of people stuck in a cabin during a snowstorm trying to find out who amongst them could be a werewolf.

Josh Ruben, who directed the flick, manages to capture a lot of the original’s silliness in figuring out who may be a flesh-eating monster and who is just there trying to make it through alive.

  1. Silent Hill (2006)

It is an adaptation of Konami’s 1999 video game; Silent Hill. A woman took her adopted daughter to the town of silent hill and finds herself after a car crash fighting a local cult while she searches for her lost daughter.

It is a psychological horror film that grossed over $100 million at the box office. The game movie stars Radha Michell, Sean Bean, Laurie Holden
