Alexander Djiku’s One Match Ban for Betting Overturned

After being placed on a match ban for sports betting, Alexander Djiku subsequently cleared and named captain for Strasbourg’s Ligue 1 match against PSG on Wednesday.

Alexander Djiku, who plays centre-back for Strasbourg in the Ligue 1 and a part of the Black Stars of Ghana football squad that represented Ghana, at the just concluded FIFA World Cup in Qatar, was reportedly handed a match ban and a heavy fine for engaging in sports betting activities.

The activities by Djiku that necessitated the penalty, was said to have been conducted in the 2020/ 2021 football season. He reportedly placed a bet of 20 Euros on a La Liga match involving Real Madrid on July 20, 2020

The implication of the ban was that Djiku will miss the game between his club and PSG on Wednesday, the 28th.

However, it was reported that he was cleared on Tuesday, the 27th from the charges and the ban lifted after a successful appeal. Djiku went ahead to captain the team for their match against PSG which they lost 2.1

It was reported earlier that Djiku and 76 other players and coaches were investigated and charged by the Professional Football League for their involvement in sports betting during the 2021/22 season.
