Nasser Kerim, who is a health worker from Zeu Health Center III in Zombo district, in the Northern Region of Uganda is reported to have lost Shillings 6.7 million (USD$1,775), which was earmarked for the just concluded polio vaccination campaign, on the World Cup sports betting wager.
The health worker is said to have served as the supervisor for Aka sub-county in Zombo district, during the vaccination exercise. The funds were made available to him for the facilitation of the Village Health Teams (VHTs), Local Council chairpersons, and other health workers during the campaign.
According to initial reports, the money was disbursed to Kerim’s bank account on 19th November 2022, to pay about 240 officials who participated in the door-to-door national polio vaccination campaign in the sub-county.
However, it was reported that he failed to pay the officials as stipulated. The Zombo District Health Officer (DHO); Mark Bramali, disclosed that while being questioned, Kerim revealed that he used part of the money to wager on the on-going world cup, but lost the bets.
The Zombo deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC); Grace Atim, stated that Kerim has been tasked to refund the funds immediately.
It was reported that between November 4 and 10, 2022, the Ministry of Health implemented a nationwide door-to-door polio vaccination campaign, targeted at children aged zero to five years old, as part of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), Rotary International and other partners.
