South African lawyer advocate; Anthea Platt SC has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Gauteng Gambling Board (GGB).
This was confirmed by Parks Tau; Gauteng’s MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development, who outlined the role of the board members in increasing revenue for the province.
A new board was also appointed as part of the measures undertaken by Parks Tau to strengthen governance and management at the GGB.
The newly appointed board members were directed by Parks Tau, to resolve matters of governance, which would include the appointment of the executive management of GGB.
According to Parks Tau, the Gauteng gambling industry was critical to Gauteng’s economy and thus the new board was enjoined to accelerate GGB’s efforts to promote socio-economic inclusivity in the industry. The Gauteng government in return will continue to act decisively in addressing challenges at provincial entities to ensure that they fulfill their economic and developmental mandates.
The GGB has collected taxes in excess of R14bn (N379,442,400,000.00) for the provincial government since its inception in 1996
Anthea Platt SC is an accomplished and experienced senior advocate with a demonstrated history of working in the law practice industry as well as in the governance of it. Before her appointment as the Chairperson of GGB, she was council member and deputy chair of the Legal Practice Council, Acting Chairperson; Disciplinary Committee at the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors, South Africa. She is also a co-founder Basadi Ba Molao; an Education and Training Services Organisation, focused on the education, training and empowerment of women in the legal profession and in the community.
Speaking after her official swearing-in, Platt said: “As new members of the board, we are fully committed to regulating the gambling industry in a transparent, ethical, equitable, competent and efficient manner for the benefit of all stakeholders.”
She added: “We will work hard to improve the regulatory framework while we also ensure that we embrace new technologies through the introduction of new gambling legislation for the province. It is essential that we discharge our duties to maintain law and order in the gambling industry by making sure that the environment is fair, not only for the licensees but also for the punters and all affected stakeholders. It is essential that the GGB continues to carry out its mandate and further contribute to the economic recovery solutions of the Gauteng Province.”
The new board was appointed in terms of the Gauteng Gambling Board Act No. 4 of 1995. The Gauteng Gambling Act was promulgated in 1995; the Act legalized other forms of gambling in the province and provided for the establishment of the GGB.
Platt will be assisted by businessman Timothy Sukazi who was appointed as her deputy Chairperson and 10 (ten) other board members.
