13. Trinidad and Tobago:

They were under British possession until 1962. They have a population of 1.4million and their principal language is English

Casinos are officially illegal in Trinidad and Tobago. However, because of a legal loophole, casinos can operate if they are run as “private member clubs”. Currently, there are 90 such clubs in the country, although only a dozen operate as full-scale casinos. The largest one, is the Royal Princess Members Club. It has 180 slot machines and 12 table games. The minimum age to gamble in Trinidad and Tobago is 18.

 14. Guadeloupe:

They have been under French territory since 1674. They have a population of 400,000 and their principal language is French. Their currency is Euro

Casino gambling is legal in Guadeloupe, and the territory’s first casino, at the La Caravelle Hotel in Sainte-Anne, opened in 1970. Currently, the island has two casinos; the Casino du Gosier on Basse-Terre Island with 180 slot machines and seven table games, and the Casino du Saint-François on Grande-Terre Island with 91 slot machines and four table games. The minimum age to gamble in Guadeloupe is 21.

15. Martinique:

They have been under the French territory since 1635. They have a population of 375,000 and their principal language is French. Currency is Euro.

Casino gambling is legal in Martinique, and the territory’s first casino, at the Martinique Hilton in Fort-de-France, opened in 1971. Currently, the island has two casinos; the Casino Batelière Plazza in Fort-de-France, which has 144 slot machines and 10 table games, and the Casino Trois-Ilets in Anse Mitan, which has 70 slot machines and four table games. The minimum age to gamble in Martinique is 18.

 

16. Saint Barthélemy:

They have been under the French territory since 1878.  They have a population of 9,900 and their principal language is French. Currency is Euro.

Currently, there are no casinos on Saint Barthélemy this might be due to opposition from both residents and the authorities.

17. Saint-Martin:

They have been under French territory since 1648. They have a population of 39,000 and their principal language is French. Currency is Euro.

Currently, there are no casinos in French Saint-Martin.

 18. Anguilla:

They have been under British territory since 1650. Their population is 15,000 and their principal language is English. Currency is Eastern Caribbean Dollar.

Mostly due to religious opposition, casinos are illegal in Anguilla.  Residents and tourists who want to gamble can take a 30-minute ferry ride to the casinos in Sint Maarten.

 19. British Virgin Islands:

They have been under British territory since 1648. Their population is 39,000. Principal language is English and their currency is US dollar.

Casinos are illegal in the British Virgin Islands.

2o. Cayman Islands:

They have been under British territory since 1670. Their population is 66,000. Principal language is English and currency is Cayman Island dollars.

Casino gambling is illegal in the Cayman Islands.

21. Montserrat:

They have been under British territory since 1632. Population is 5000. Principal language is English and currency is Eastern Caribbean dollar.

Largely due to religious opposition, casinos are illegal in Montserrat.

 22.Turks and Caicos Islands:

They have been under British territory since 1783. Population is 39,000. Principal language is English and currency is US dollar

Casino gambling has been legal in the Turks and Caicos Islands since 1980. Currently, the territory has one casino, Casablanca Casino, which is located at Grace Bay on Providenciales Island, and it has 85 slot machines and 17 table games.

The minimum age for visitors to gamble in the Turks and Caicos is 18, while residents however, must be at least 21 and earn at least $75,000 a year to gamble.

 

23. Aruba:

They have been under Dutch (Netherlands) territory since 1636. Their population is 107,000. Principal language is Dutch and Papiamentu. Currency is Aruban Florin.

Casinos are legal in Aruba (so long as they are in hotels), and currently there are 13 casinos on the island. Six are in Oranjestad, while the other seven are four miles away in Palm Beach. Among the best known are the Alhambra Casino in Oranjestad, with 450 slot machines and 16 table games, and the Stellaris Casino in Palm Beach, with 500 slot machines and 27 table games. The minimum age to gamble in Aruba is 18.

24. Bonaire:

They have been under Dutch territory since 1636. Population is 20,000. Principal language is Dutch and Papiamentu. Currency is US dollar.

Bonaire is the “B” of the “BES Islands”—the two other BES Islands are Saba and Sint Eustatius.

According to Dutch law which BES Island is under, the operation of a land-based casino must be connected to a hotel venture as separate casinos or remote gambling operations are not allowed. License applications must be filed with the Executive Council of the particular desired island.

Currently, Licenses have been granted to two boutique hotels on Bonaire; Coral Casino Bonaire with 80 slot machines & 7 tables and Divi Flamingo Beach Resort with 60 slot machines & 5 tables. The minimum age to gamble in Bonaire is 21.

 

25. Curaçao.

They have been under Dutch territory since 1634. Population is 164,000. Principal language is Dutch, English & Papiamentu and currency is Netherlands Antillean Guilder.

Casino gambling is legal in Curaçao, but must be in hotels having at least 150 rooms. Currently, the island has 11 casinos (all in Willemstad). The two largest are the Carnaval Casino at the Renaissance Resort Curaçao, with 335 slot machines and 19 tables games, and the Casino Veneto at the Holiday Beach Resort and Casino, with 450 slot machines and 14 table games. The minimum age to gamble in Curaçao is 18.

 

26. Saba:

They have been under the Dutch territory since 1816. Population is 1,900. Principal language is English and Dutch and currency is USD.

Saba is one of the three “BES Islands.” There are currently no casinos in Saba, largely due to its small size and lack of tourism.

 

27. Sint Eustatius:

They have been under Dutch territory since 1636. Population is 3,100. Principal language is English and Dutch and currency is USD

Sint Eustatius (known locally as Statia) is one of the three “BES Islands.” And just like Saba, there are no casinos in SE largely due to its small size and relative lack of tourism.

 

28. Sint Maarten:

There have been under the Dutch territory since 1648. Population is 43,000. Principal language is English and currency is Netherlands Antillean Guilder.

Casino gambling has been legal in Sint Maarten, since 1961. The territory currently has 13 casinos located in three cities. The largest casino on the island is the Princess Port de Plaisance Resort at Cole Bay with 500 slot machines and 23 tables.

 

29. Puerto Rico:

They were under the Spanish territory until 1898 and have been under U.S. territory since 1898. Population is 2.9 million. Principal language is English and Spanish and currency is USD

Casino gambling became legal in Puerto Rico in 1948, but must be in hotels. Today, the island has 16 casinos that are spread across 10 cities. The largest casino in P R is the Caguas Real Hotel and Casino in Caguas with 570 slot machines and 10 table games. The minimum age to gamble in Puerto Rico is 18.

30. U.S. Virgin Islands (U.S.V.I.):

There were under Danish territory until 1917 and have been under U.S. territory since 1917. Population is 104,000. Principal language is English and currency is USD.

Out of the three main Islands on U.S.V.I; Saint John, Saint Thomas and Saint Croix, only Saint Croix voted for legalisation of casino gambling in 1994 when a non-binding referendum to legalize casino was held.

Currently, Saint Croix’s is permitted to have up to six casinos under the new law (All casinos must be in “major” hotels). In 1999, the Island opened its only Caino; Divi Carina Bay Resort and Casino, which is in its largest city; Christiansted. The Casino has 250 slot machines and 17 table games. The minimum age to gamble in the U.S. Virgin Islands is 21.

In conclusion, the above summation shows that, 18 of the Caribbean’s 30 jurisdictions, permit casino gambling, 15 currently have casino gambling, and the total number of legal land-based casinos is 102.

However, Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many Caribbean casinos is said to be shut down and there might be changes post pandemic.
